Slovak usually makes a finite verb negative with ne-.

Core rule

What changes

Form most finite verb negatives with ne- attached to the verb.

Use nie alone for a negative answer; do not usually say nie mám or nie rozumiem.

Pattern

Negation attaches to the verb

  • mám → nemám
  • rozumiem → nerozumiem
  • Nie, ďakujem. → No, thank you.
